The most persistent finding in the learning-sciences literature is also the least commercial: the effort of retrieval is the mechanism of memory. When a student generates an answer — even a wrong one — the brain does work that a supplied answer cannot substitute for.
This is not a metaphor. Roediger and Karpicke's 2006 experiments showed that students who re-read a passage twice remembered less a week later than students who read once and were tested. Testing is not measurement of learning. Testing is learning.
Modern AI tutors, when they hand over solutions, are re-runs of the re-reading arm. The student consumes an artifact. The brain does not do the work. The felt sense of understanding is real; the durable knowledge is not.
What breaks this loop is a system that refuses to hand the answer over — but does something more useful: creates the conditions for the student to generate it. That is the design brief for Brainback.
Attempt-gate is the first move. Nothing happens until the student writes their attempt. Even a wrong attempt activates the retrieval circuitry that a pasted question does not.
The hint ladder is the second move. Each rung is calibrated to name a smaller and smaller piece of scaffolding — the concept, then the tool, then the setup, then the first computational step. Level 5 stops at the second-to-last step. The final compute is the student's alone.
Reveal is the third move — but only after all five hints and a written reflection. Reveal is not a shortcut; it is a debrief. The worked solution now has an audience whose retrieval circuitry has been on for twenty minutes.
None of this is punishment. All of it is respect for how learning actually works.
